The friction of bearings unit has been designed to demonstrate the differences between sliding and rolling friction and its application for different industrial uses. The unit is equipped with different types of plain and rolling bearing of different materials like iron and bronze.

                                     
  • The unit is composed of a shaft, a drum and a flywheel, which are all mounted together on a base plate.
  • Torque is applied by adding weights on the flywheel using hanger which corresponds to the frictional torque when motion begins.
  • The heavy flywheel generates bearing forces due to its weight. So that a moment is applied that equals the friction moment at the start of the rotation.
  • The unit is equipped with replaceable bearing shells made of different materials to be used as slide bearings.
  • The coefficients of friction can be determined through experiments.
  • The bearing friction is very low when using the roller bearing. In this case, the flywheel can be used for basic experiments on rotational dynamics.
  • The unit is designed to be fixed to a wall using mounting brackets.
