The Hooke’s Coupling Apparatus allows the investigation of the universal joint shaft. The unit also helps in the determination of the gimbal error on Hooke’s Couplings.

  • The unit is used to study the universal joint shaft that are used to transfer torque and rotational motion.
  • The apparatus is composed of two universal joints connected to each other by an intermediate shaft.
  • The universal joint is also known as Hooke’s coupling and it combines two non-aligned shafts.
  • By using the universal joint, the torque and the speed are non-uniformly transmitted. This non-uniform transmission is called the gimbal error.
  • The arrangement of the universal joints and the deflection angle can be set using two rotary disks on the base plate.
  • On the drive side, the input angle is set and read by the drive universal joint.
  • The intermediate shaft transmits the torque to the driven universal joint.
  • The output rotation angle can be measured.
  • The gimbal error is determined from the difference between the two angles.
  • The components of the unit are mounted on a base plate.
  • The unit is supplied with two handles which make it easy to carry the unit.
