Automotive ignition circuit control system (EIG103) is designed to introduce students to the most common automotive ignition systems namely; distributor, distributor-less and coil on plug types. The training system features five different setups of the main five ignition systems found in most vehicles. Each setup includes all real components to constitute each ignition system with its corresponding test points and indication lamps. The trainer enables trainees to grasp the knowledge in different systems as well as enhance skills in proper troubleshooting techniques and maintenance. It also allows practicing hands-on skills of the electrical wiring required to operate each ignition type properly.

  • The trainer comprises five most common ignition systems found in all vehicles nowadays:
    • 1st type is conventional distributor ignition system
    • 2nd type is electronic distributor ignition system
    • 3rd type is distributor-less (coil-on-plug) ignition system
    • 4th type is distributor-less coil near plug ignition system
    • 5th type is distributor-less waste spark ignition system.
  • Each ignition system is equipped with all of its components that are prearranged for testing and observation.
  • The components of the systems are camshaft & crankshaft position sensors module, distributor conventional ignition system, distributor-less ignition system Type A, distributor-less ignition system Type B, distributor-less ignition system Type C, and distributor electronic ignition system.
  • Additionally, digital displays and indication LEDs, faults panel, and operation module.
  • The faults panel provides a troubleshooting simulation system that allows inserting various types of faults that commonly occurs in such systems.
  • The trainer can handle 7 simulated faults in the system.
  • These faults help trainees to learn identifying and solving technical problems in different systems.
  • The module for crankshaft and camshaft position sensors is located in the middle of the front control panel, this module includes 2 throttle body one is manual and the other is electronic camshaft gear, camshaft sensor, crankshaft gear, crankshaft sensor1 and crank sensor 2.
  • The crankshaft is connected internally to a DC motor, this motor works as a simulation to the real engine and gives the required rotational motion.
  • Four digital displays present the measuring value of the distributor A type and distributor B type, they display both primary voltage and secondary voltage.
  • As well, three digital displays present the secondary voltage of distributor-less A type, distributor-less B type, distributor-less C type.• The trainer provides two digital displays in the indicators panel to display the value of both Dwell duration and ignition timing (BTDC).
  • Dwell in ignition systems refers to the period of time that the coil is turned on. That is, it is the length of time that current flows through the primary winding of the coil.
  • Ignition timing (or spark timing) controls when the spark plug fires during the Compression Stroke. Ignition timing is measured in degrees of crankshaft rotation, before top dead center (BTDC).
  • The control panel contains two digital displays for the engine speed and the battery voltage.
  • The trainer is designed with a schematic diagram on the upper side that provides representation of the system using LEDs.
  • Trainees can visualize the system firing order by observing what is happening on the schematic diagram and link it with real system operation down in the front panel.
  • The lower operation panel is provided including all operation switches digital displays & indication LEDs for different components in the system.
  • (TPS) Throttle valve position sensor: measures the signal coming from the sensor on the electronic throttle body.
  • (CMP) Camshaft position sensor: measures the signal from the sensor on the camshaft in the camshaft & crankshaft module.
  • All Real full running automotive components required to properly execute the operation of the ignition systems are integrated within this trainer internally or externally, Example for Automotive components: (ECU, AFS, TPS, BPS, MPS, WTS, O2, ISC, ATS, Injector, Spark plug, Power transistor, Power distributor, Ignition coil, Crank Sensor, Cam Sensor) if needed.
  • Through relevant experiments, trainees will be able to differentiate between ignition systems based on their principle of operation (normal ignition systems are based on the distributor, while electronic ignition systems are based on ECU), to familiarize with each system components, to learn about the function of each component and the role it plays in the circuit, to learn about the wiring of each system exactly as it is in real vehicles.
  • This is the oldest style of ignition system that uses points, a distributor, and an external coil.
  • The distributor A type contains ignition coil, battery terminals, battery indication LED, ignition coil terminals, distributor, distributor terminals, spark plugs, and ground terminal for spark plugs.
  • This system is a modification on the conventional system that works electronic circuits, usually by transistors. The transistors are controlled by sensors to generate electric pulses which then generate a high voltage spark that provide a better economy and lower emission.
  • The distributor B type contains ignition coil, distributor, ignition coil terminals, battery indication LED, battery terminals, distributor terminals, spark plugs, and ground terminal for spark plug.
  • It incorporates all the electronic controls found in a distributer-less ignition system, but instead of two cylinders sharing a single coil, each COP coil services just one cylinder .
  • The distributor-less A type contains ignition coil terminals, battery indication LED, battery terminals, ECU terminals, spark plugs, ground terminal for spark plugs, and ignition coils.
  • coil near plug systems house the transformer a little further away, and have a short high-voltage spark plug wire between the transformer and spark plug.
  • The distributor-less B type contains ignition coil 1, ignition coil 2, ignition coil 1 terminals. Ignition coil 2 terminals, ECU terminals, battery terminals, battery LED, spark plugs, and ground terminal of spark plugs.
  • These ignition coils fire two spark plugs simultaneously; one on the compression stroke and one on the exhaust stroke. The spark delivered on the exhaust stroke, called a “waste spark” has no effect.
  • The distributor-less C type contains ignition coil 1, ignition coil 2, ignition coil 1 terminals. Ignition coil 2 terminals, transistor 1 terminals, transistor 2 terminals, battery terminals, battery indication LED, ECU terminals, spark plugs, and ground terminal of spark plugs.
