Determination of Settling Velocity
(FM-024)
  • Familiarization with definition and factors affecting the settling velocity.
  • Calculation of the settling velocity
  • Investigation of the parameters affecting the settling velocity in spheres such as:
  • Density and viscosity of the fluid
  • Density and diameter of the sphere
  • 2 cylinders
    • inner Ø: 90mm each
    • height: 1330mm each
    • sink height: 1000mm each
  • Spheres
    • aluminium (density: 2,7kg/dm3)
    • 2x 5mm Ø
    • 2x 10mm Ø
  • Density of glycerin: 1261.3 kg/m3.
  • Density of hydraulic oil 46: 861 kg/m3.
  • Determination of Settling Velocity (FM - 024)
  • Hard copy user manual
  • Spheres.
  • Tank of glycerin.
  • Tank of hydraulic oil 46.

The determination of settling velocity trainer (FM-024) demonstrates the influence of sphere size and density on settling velocity as well as the density and viscosity of the fluid. The trainer is composed of two transparent cylinders for comparative examinations.

  • Two transparent cylinders enable comparing the influence of the sphere diameter, sphere density and different fluids on the settling velocity.
  • Guide tubes in the cover of the two cylinders enable safe insertion of the sphere.
  • At the lower end of the cylinder there is a sluice through which the spheres can be removed again without significant loss of fluid.
  • A stopwatch measures the sedimentation time.
