The depletion of fossil fuels and environmental concerns highlight the need for sustainable alternatives. Researchers are exploring hydrogen as a clean fuel for internal combustion engines, due to its carbon-free combustion. The Oxy-Hydrogen (HHO) generator is emerging as an affordable and accessible energy source. This simulator, with real physical components, helps trainees understand the HHO generator’s operation, components, composition, and performance factors, with parameters measured and displayed using Daq software.
- The HHO generator converts water (H2O) into HHO gas through electrolysis, a process that uses an electric current to decompose water into oxygen and hydrogen gas.
- The generator parts consist of:
- Cell Generator
- The cell generator performs electrolysis to separate H2O molecules into HHO gas, with various parts contributing to HHO production, including:
- Electrode Plate
- The electrode acts as an electrical current conductor, connecting the voltage source to the water to be electrolyzed.
- Spacer
- A spacer is a sequence of nonconductive plates composed of high-density Polyethylene (HDPE).
- Gasket
- The gasket prevents water leaks by securely sealing small gaps on the side of the HHO generator casing.
- Cell Generator Cover
- The acrylic cover clamps the stainless-steel plates and connects the anode (+) and cathode (-) electrodes
- Connector
- The connector, located on the top, allows for input of the distilled water with KOH electrolyte and output of the HHO gas.
- The plates are arranged in parallel with the aim of obtaining more HHO gas production volumes with lower electric current intake than single stack models.
- To prevent electrical leakage, each plate is coated with a gasket.
In the generator cells should be coated gaskets that serve as a barrier between the plate and as a leakage prevention electric current.
- The cover encloses the stainless-steel plates, with bolts that also serve as current conductors to the anode (+) and cathode (-) electrodes.
- Different sensors are integrated in the system to measure temperature, flowrate & etc.
- The initial stage in the operation is to fill the vessel with electrolyte solution until the series of regularly placed electrode plates is entirely immersed.
- The HHO generator is activated by connecting the power cable and pressing the on button, then left to stabilize for 30 minutes.
- After 30 minutes, the applied voltage is set to 12 V, and the timer is triggered.
- The gas generation process begins, causing the water volume in the flowmeter to rise, indicating hydrogen gas production.
- When it is achieved, the generator engine is switched off, and the value of the output electric current is shown on the screen of the digital power supply.
- The volume increase is used to calculate the HHO gas generation rate, with the output temperature displayed on the screen.
